IBM research postdoc interview questions (Melbourne)



This post is a summary of a postdoc role interview process for IBM research in Melbourne.

Screening Interview (45mins)


Normal questions:
  • Why did you go to the current institution?
  • What is your preference of IBM (B2B) over B2C companies such as Facebook etc.?
  • Are you willing to move to Australia?
  • Possible start date if accepted?
  • What do you know about IBM?

Tech questions:
  • About my research questions?
  • What's the problem and how to resolve it?
  • What kind of DL models have you experienced?
  • Why LSTM was invented?
  • When to use CNN and LSTM?

1 day interview, 6 rounds (tech+hr), need to prepare 45 mins talk on any topic.


Normal or behaviour questions:
  • What do you see the difference between industry and academic labs?
  • Describe experience about coping with difficulties on some projects?
  • If you have enough money, what are you going to research?
  • What do you feel working alone during your PhD?
  • Do you have any experience on reaching for help for dealing with some problem?
  • How do you end up with your research topic, % of your input?
  • What is your expected career path in the next 5 years?
Tech questions:
  • Why NN works?
  • How does NN lean weights/parameters?
  • How does your data handle bias?
  • Describe the cycle of a machine learning model development
  • How do you see your field or machine learning will be headed for next few years?
  • How do you manage/cooperate with others to meet the deadline?
  • Compare different loss funcitons
  • Compare different activation functions
  • Why did you choose this programming language for your project?

* The HR did not give me the final result after several months, and I got the result after starting my job several months...
